Standards have come into their own for education data. NCES led the way, SEDCARS, SPEEDE/ExPRESS, SIF, PESC. The last group to commit to them seems to be the software vendors. They are waiting for their customers to insist. Instead of leading, the vendors are delaying their capital investments as long as possible.
The EduGuru speaks: Vendors, you can’t wait any longer. Comply. In the 70’s, the lack of standards for education data was a barrier to electronic exchanges and automation. Today, the number of standards is the new barrier. Which ones will persist or go away? Who would have guessed that Texas Instruments would lose its PC business to a company being run a few miles away in a college dorm by Michael Dell?
